How to detect counterfeit electronic equipment

Counterfeit appliances are becoming increasingly common in the UK, with the sale of fake electronics growing rapidly.

Counterfeit electronics are being used in many applications, which is extremely detrimental to businesses whose products are being imitated or badly reproduced. This can be very damaging to reputations of trustworthy brands that are associated with these products, and most importantly; the safety of the user is being compromised. We want to ensure that the process of detecting counterfeit electronics is made aware to consumers so that the presence of counterfeit products in the electronics industry can be eradicated.

Many of the most dangerous counterfeit goods for consumers are home electrical appliances, but how are we to distinguish fake electronic equipment from genuine? Sadly, they are not that easy to spot and there are rarely any tell-tale signs to look out for.

The most self-explanatory method for avoiding obtaining counterfeit goods is to only purchase from trustworthy and authorised brands so that you are safe in the mind that you have original equipment directly from the manufacturer. This will also ensure that your product is safe and complies with regulations.

Many counterfeit products can be established by faulty marks, fake logos and indentations. You can be sure that your appliance is the real deal by getting it tested, as a professional with the correct tools and knowledge will be able to detect differences between the original components within the appliances and that of the counterfeit ones. Paying attention to small details such as the size and shape of the product logo or the texture of the material can determine whether you have purchased a dodgy product. PAT Testing your appliance can help determine if your purchase is an imitation, as experts within this profession will be able to test a component’s electrical characteristics.

The dangers

Within the consumer market, you will always find fraudulent businesses that will send cheap imitations of popular products; and it is something that we can’t really control effectively. The infiltration of such products on the market has become increasingly prevalent, so finding a way to either control or prevent it is becoming more difficult. Not only are electronic companies experiencing a loss of revenue, but a lot of the time they are left to pick up the pieces left by these fraudulent businesses that sell imitations; as many of the products have fake electrical components and are left to malfunction; causing huge health and safety risks to the end user.

Eliminating the sale of counterfeit products within the electronics market is not something that can be done overnight, but there are many preventative methods that we can put in place to curb the growth of fake goods in the UK.  There are various ways to detect counterfeit electronics within businesses and for regular consumer use; and there are brand new processes being developed all the time across the globe. It is our job to ensure that we are buying from reputable brands and sources and not cutting corners by going for cheaper options that may be putting yourself, your employers or the lives of others at risk.
