5 benefits of using LED lights

Everyone tells us that light emitting diodes (LEDs) are better than standard lighting – but what’s the reasoning behind it? To answer this question, we’ve picked out our top five benefits of using LED lights over traditional bulbs.

1. Efficiency

The major benefit of using LED lights instead of traditional lighting is that they are far more efficient. This statistic will give you an idea: LED lights run at 80% efficiency. This means that 80% of the electricity produced is converted in light, whilst 20% is lost as heat, etc. For traditional lighting, you can switch those figures around. That’s right – with traditional light bulbs only 20% of the energy used is converted into light, and a staggering 80% is lost in other forms. This sounds great, but it gets even better. The operational life of LED lights extends way beyond that of traditional light bulbs, which helps make LED lights even more efficient. Whether used at your business or at your home, the efficiency of LED lights can save you a whole heap of money.

2. Durability

We touched on this briefly in the first point, but the durability of LEDs is so astounding that it needs further explanation. LED lights are far more durable than standard light bulbs. In fact, most LEDs have an operational life of 100,000 hours. Whilst normal light bulbs will burn out after a period of use, LEDs simply fade slowly with time, and therefore last a lot longer than traditional bulbs.

3. Low UV output

LEDs are also known for their low output of ultraviolet light. This means that they can be used in business premises to light rooms, warehouses or factories containing materials that are sensitive to UV radiation. They are also far more suitable for other sensitive areas, such as schools, museums and art galleries. Traditional bulbs emit a large amount of UV radiation as electricity is converted into light, and so are not suitable for these purposes.

4. Environmentally friendly

LEDs are far more environmentally friendly than traditional light bulbs. Whilst many other types of light bulbs contain harmful or toxic chemicals like mercury, LED lights are free from anything that can harm the environment. They also more durable, too, which means they save on materials and production.

5. Low voltage

Due to the way they convert electricity into light, even low voltage power supplies are suitable for use with LEDs. This can be extremely useful if you’re running lighting from a generator, or from solar panels, which could not produce the electricity required to power standard bulbs for any length of time.

Have you made the switch?

Although the price point of LED light bulbs is higher than that of traditional light bulbs, those who invest in them would rarely return to the old style of light bulbs, the above benefits help cement the LED lighting products of the future. Some are such fans that they have subscribed to the LED’s magazine!
